Civic Engagement Certificate Program

The Civic Engagement Certificate Program honors students who have participated in a significant number of service-learning courses throughout their collegiate career and have distinguished themselves by demonstrating an outstanding level of commitment to civic leadership and social responsibility.

Civic Engagement Students Must Meet/Complete:

  • All requirements for graduation with a 3.0 GPA or higher
    • 4 designated service-learning or community-based research courses
    • 12 credit hours
    • Portfolio of assignments and final reflections completed in service-learning courses
    • One service-learning capstone project:
      • A self-developed or community based research project, in consultation with the director of academic civic engagement.
        • Requirements: field work, written report, and action plan
      • Long-term International Service-Learning experience, at least 3 credit-hours and 6-8 weeks in length
        • At least 3 credit hours & 6-8 weeks in length
        • Requirements: Final reflection paper
      • Other, must be approved by Director of Civic Engagement

How to Apply

  • Complete the CECP Application (DOC) the semester before you plan to graduate, and send it to Dr. Brian MacHarg, Director of Civic Engagement
  • Turn in a service-learning portfolio prior to Fall/Spring Break of your final semester. Portfolios will be reviewed by a team of faculty, staff, students, and community partners

Civic Engagement Students will receive:

  • Certificate at end of year ceremony
  • Designated stole at commencement
  • Note on academic transcripts
